Famous Sites

Here are two great site from Ancient Egypt.

The Valley of Kings is another popular destination in Egypt. It is here that the ancient tombs of the Pharaohs lie hidden beneath the desert sands. It is located in the west bank of the Nile River, the Valley of Kings houses some of Egypt's most treasured monuments. The main attractions there are the tombs of Tutankhamun and Ramses II. These underground complexes feature captivating craftsmanship and a mysterious atmosphere that brings in tourists every day. The Valley of Kings contains 63 tombs in all, though some of them are not open to the public for tours.

The Sphinx, is a great stone carving of a lion with a human head that rests near the Giza Pyramids. It is carved out of a huge block of sandstone, and represents Re-Horakhty, an ancient Egyptian sun god. Visitors can go near the Sphinx, but not close enough to climb on it or touch its sides.

Pyramid of Giza

Here are some facts you might not have known about the pyramid of Giza.

1) Khufu was the first pharaoh who build a pyramid at Giza.
2 The entire project took about 23 years to complete, 2,300,000 building blocks, weighing an average of 2.5 tons each were used to build the great pyramid.
3) The length of each side of the pyramid at the base is 755 feet (230.4 m).

8) Until 1984 it was possible to climb up the sides of the pyramid but the deaths of tourists caused this to be forbidden.

Queens of Ancient Eqypt- Hatshepsut

Here is some information on a Queen named...............Hatsheput!

HATSHEPUT-
Born: 1502 BC-1458 BC
Family: Her mother was Ahmes. Her father was Tuthmosis (ruled Egypt for approximately 12 to 14 years).  Married Thutmose II.
About Her: Hatshepsut was not one to sit back and wait for her nephew to age enough to take her place.Hatshepsut was unusual: she was a woman, but ruled as a man: she was pharaoh in ancient Egypt. She was a successful ruler, too, remaining in power nearly 22 years until her death, longer than any other female ruler (there were only a handful in several thousand years) until Cleopatra. Although her reign was the beginning of a long, peaceful period in Egypt, she was successful in warfare when necessary. Her most important accomplishment was to re-establish the trade routes disrupted by previous conflicts, creating an ongoing source of wealth for Egypt. Hatshepsut, as a female, had many obstacles to overcome. There was always a threat of revolt, especially as her bitter nephew came of age. Using propaganda and keen political skills, she  jumped each hurdle she faced. To quell the fears of her people, she became a "king" in all during her reign. She even dressed in the traditional garb like a male ruler.

Death- (from blood test and research from present day) blood infection while she was in her 50s, and that she had arthritis, bad teeth, and probably diabetes as well.

Pharaohs

Here is one Pharaoh that has an interesting story...check it out!

KHUFU-
King Khufu ruled in the 4th dynasty from the years 2589 BC- 2566 BC. He was the son of King Snefuru, and Queen Hetephres. He had two wives, Marinates and Henusten. He had 6 sons, and 15 daughters. His leadership style was described as cruel and heartless. we was hated by the Egyptians to such an extreme, that after he died, they burnt his possessions. One of his major accomplishments is that he is known for the Pharaoh who built the Pyramid of Giza. His most famous Monument/ buildings is the White Statue, and the Pyramid of Giza. Till today, there is some controversy that the 'White Statue of  Khufu' is actually another Pharaoh from the third dynasty. Some unusual traits of King Khufu is that he did not believe in Egyptian gods. He was pushing for the belief on one god. He started banning sacrifices, banished temples, and refused to have priests. In 2566 BC, King Khufu died of old age. He was buried in the Pyramid of Giza.
-Some shocking/interesting info: King Khufu was also known as Cheop. He was also famously known as the Pharaoh who made his daughter a slave to earn more money for the palace.
