Hieroglyphics! Super cool stuff! And here are some facts....
1) It is a type of written language that Egyptians used
2) It meant 'sacred writing' in Greek
3) Only Scribes and Priests could understand the symbols
4) There are three dialogues in Egyptian. Hieroglyphics, Demotic and Hieratic
5) There were Hieroglyphics for certain letters (that exist in the Roman alphabets) and some for sounds
6) 'The Rosetta Stone' (discovered by french soldiers who were building forts in Egypt) is a stone that has all three Egyptian dialogues scribed into it. It was used to decode the Egyptian's written language. The stone was translated by French man Jean-Francois Champollion.
7) Hieroglyphics contained over 2,000 characters (symbols)
8) Vowels were not usually written in their words, but were pronounced often
9) Egyptians wrote in Hieroglyphics, but it was not spoken. Egyptians spoke an Afro-Asiatic language. including Berber, Semitic, Somali and Beja languages
10) Hieroglyphics was lost when the Romans took over Egypt
